COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS—AN EXPLANATION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin, —With reference to counsel's remarks in re Wain's Hotel case, as follows, as roported in your issue of 18th June 1892 :— "Mr Haggitt: There is the charge, but Mr Palmer denies it, and is prepared to swear that it is entirely.a mistake so far as he is concerned. These rooms in which it is said gambling went on were let to a commercial traveller, and Mr Palmer says he had no control whatever over them. More will come out about that shortly. There is now a case pending to bring out the whole of the facts, and then your Worships will hear more about it; but in the meantime the dissentient member of the beach dissents on a ground we have never been asked to meet," — several complaints were made by members of above and kindred associations in regard to them, and on requesting an explanation from the licensee, I received the enclosed letter, which speaks for itself; and. as the remarks referred to were published all over the colony, my association would be obliged if you will publish this and the letter enclosed.—l am, &c , T. K. Hakty, Dunedin, August 16. Secretary. Duned iv, August 16th, 1892. The Secretary Commercial Travellers' Association, Dunedin. Dear Sir,—ln reference to the paragraph which you have shown me, the whole thing is a misunderstanding. lam extremely sorry if any annoyance has been caused to some of the members of your association, for although the loom referred to is with others kept specially as a commercial travellers' sample room, it was not occupied at the time in question.—l am, ifcc , Alexr. Palmer.
