POISONING A FAVOURITE. London, May 1,

(Received May 2, at 10 a.m.)

Orrne is still suffering from the effects of an irritant mineral poison. The Duke of Westminster states that the colt nearly died on Sunday.

The incident has caused an immense sensation in the betting market, and 4 to 1 is now offered against Orme. The Duke offers a reward of LSOOO for information that will lead to the arrest of the person who poisoned the colt.

The R.M.S.S. Avawa, which left Lyttelton on Saturday night for London, took the racehorse Day Dream and the well-known hunter Selim, both the property of Captain Guthrie, who was aide de camp to Lord Onslow. A football match was played on Saturday at FairfieH between the Green Island and Walton Schools, and resulted in a win for the former by 4 points to 2 points (two tries to one). Donaldson and Devenio scored for Green Island, and D. Guthrie for Walton. For the winners Buchanan (2), Harraway, Ross, Donaldson, and Devenie played well, and D. Guthrie, Mann, Parker, and Anderson for the losers.
