MINING.
Our Arrowtown correspondent telegraphs :— " The Gallant Tip cake was lodged on Thursday at the bank, Queenstown, and weighs l!)3oz retorted gold from 720 tons of stone."
A conference of the directors of the Roxburgh Amalgamated Company, the United Hercules, and the Hercules No. 2 was held yesterday at the office of the former company, when it was agreed to fill in the bywash and raise the dam wall and stone work the height of 4ft above the present level, with a discharge pipe to relieve any undue pressure. The terms and conditions on which the companies agreed to raise the wall, were discussed and agreed to, the object in view being not only to secure a supply of water, but also to prevent future disputes between raceholders by forming a committee of management to have the full control of the water. It is intended to invite the small raceholders further down to contribute in some degree, and appoint a representative on the committee of management. It is calculated that by the raising of the wall as proposed the water will be held back in Lake Onslow in flood time for a distance of five miles.
