J. P. MAITLAND, Commissioner of Crown Lands. Crown Lands Office, Dunedin, 31st -.larch 1592. lap TO THE AVOMEN AND MEN RESIDING IN THE CITY OF DUNEDIN AND SUBURBS. Ladies and Gentlemen,— The following is the Text of the Petitions which I am causing to be circulated throughout Dunedin and Suburbs, and I earnestly request all of both sexes who think with me in this matter to make a point of signing them when called upon. H. S. FISH, Jun. TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE COLONY OF NEAV ZEALAND, in Parliament Assembled. AA Te, tho Undersigned, AVomen of the age of Eighteen Years and Upwards, residing in the City of Dunedin and Suburbs, humbly pray that your Honourable House will refuse to pass any Bill providing for the Extension of the Electoral Franchise to AVomen, for the following amongst other reasons, namely:— I. That the AVomen of the Colony do not desire to possess the power of voting at the Elections for Members of Parliament. 11. That the Extension of the Parliamentary Franchise to AVomen would be a measure distasteful to the great majority of the AVomen of the Colony, unnecessary, and mischievous both to themselves and to the State. 111. That if AVomen generally exercised the Franchise, the vast majority would vote in the same direction as their husbands, fathers, or brothers, and thus the only result which could accrue would be a great increase in the total vote aud a corresponding increase in the cost of elections, both to the State and the Candidates, without achieving any 'political change. IV. That, were it probable AVomen would vote contrary to the wishes of the male head of the family, much domestic unhappiness would be likely to ensue. A r. That the vast majority of the AVomen of tlie Colony are better fitted by nature and their own inclination for the exercise of domestic and social duties than occupying their, time in the consideration of politics. Being desirous of maintaining our own selfrespect, and retaining the respect, goodwill, and . love of our husbands, sons, brothers, and fathers, we humbly hope your Honourable House will give effect to the prayer of this petition. And your Petitioners will, as in duty bound, ever pray, &c. AA re, the Undersigned, being Electors of the City of Dunedin and Suburbs, humbly Petition your Honourable House not to pass any Bill extending the Electoral Franchise to Women, for the following reasons, namely : — I. That such a radical constitutional change as the Extension of the Electoral Franchise to AVomen should not be made until it has first been submitted to the Electors at a General Election. 11. That, up to the present timo, no such issue has heen placed before the Electors as a question being within the range of practical politics I 111. That your Petitioners are of opinion that the vast majority of the AVomen of the Colony do not desire to obtain or exercise tlie privilege of voting for Members of Parliament. IV. That, in places where the Franchise has been extended to AVomen, experience lias proved that, after the novelty has passed away, tho great majority decline to vote. Notably has this been proved to be the case in the City of Boston, U.S., where AVomen have the power to vote for School Commissioners. In ISSB, 20,252 AVomen registered as voters, and 19,490 voted at the Election. In ISS9, only 10,051 voted. In 1890, the number had fallen to 74JM ; while in 1891 less than 0000 went to the poll. A r. That your Petitioners firmly believe that were the Franchise extended to the AA romen of this Colony a similar result would obtain, and thus tho vast additional cost of conducting Elections would be entirely thrown away. For the above and other reasons your Petitioners humbly ask that your Honourable House will accede to the prayer of this petition. And your Petitioners will ever pray, &c, &c. lap MONEY LENT (Privately) upon Personal Security, from £5 upwards; communica* , Hons strictly private.—P.O. Box 75. 6ja
