(Received March 23, at 12.15 p.m.) •< Matthias Larkin, secretary of the South Melbourne Permanent Building and Investment Society, has surrendered to his bail, and is being tried on a charge of defrauding'the society. ANOTHER BANK SUSPENDS. The Australian Deposit and Mortgage Bank has suspended payment, owing to a heavy run, which is supposed to be due to the stoppage of the Mercantile Bank. The securities of the bank are not pledged. AN INQUIRY GRANTED. Sydney, March 23. (Received March 24, at 1 a.m.) The Government has given way to the demands of the Railway Commissioners and granted them an inquiry into the charges brought by Mr Schey. RETRENCHMENT. Adelaide, March 23. (Received March 24, at 1 a.m.) Owing to the necessity for retrenchment, the Easter encampment has been abandoned. COLOURED LABOUR. Brisbane, March 23. (Received March 23, at 12.15 p.m.) The Rev. Mr Paton, chairman of the Presbyterian New Hebrides Mission, has forwarded a strongly-worded protest to Sir Samuel Griffith against the resumption of the labour traffic. He pleads that the Queen, the British Government, and all her Majesty's, dominions should do everything possible to suppress for ever the shocking traffic and destruction of human life. THE LAUNCESTON EXHIBITION. Hobart, March 23. (Received March 23, at 12.30 p.m.) The Launceston Exhibition has closed. New Zealand exhibitors obtained 14- special mentions, 22 first prizes, six second prizes, and six highly commendeds.
