(Peu United Pbess Association.) Auckland, March 22. The illness of Mrs Cadman, who is suffering from pleurisy, iB so serious that no hopes are entertained of her recovery. The annual convention of the New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance Union opened here this morning, delegates from various parts of the colony being present. The convention will sit all the week. To-day it was decided to petition the management of the World's Fair at Chicago to prohibit the sale of liquor on the show grounds, and to close the exhibition on Sundays. Wellington, March 22. The prospect of having to face an extra levy of L6OOO for hospital purposes has excited some hostility. The trustees have received notice from the medical officers that the accommodation is insufficient. There are 55 typhoid fever cases. All the wards are full, and even the corridors have been called into requisition for beds. The report of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company recommends the payment of a 5 per cent, dividend, and the carrying of L3OOO to the reserve fund. The company held a large land sale to-day, when 8232 acres were sold for the total of L 11.646 18s. It was all pastoral land. One block brought 4-7s per acre, the rest from 21s to 30s. Walter Morris, alias Philips, charged with assault on a girl in Tasmania in 1886 was again remanded. Counsel for accused said it was very peculiar that Morris had lived in the village where the offence was said to have been committed four years' after the supposed date, and had visited it twice since, and nothing had been said of the matter. Inspector Thomson said it was understood the commission of the offence was only lately discovered. Morris was married while in Wellington. The Press says it is rumoured that a jealous woman is at the bottom of the affair. Cheistchubch, March 22. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union was held to-night. There are now 15 clubs, with a total membership of about 1300, affiliated to the union. A credit balance of LlB2 is in hand. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes was re-elected president. >
