The coal export from Westport last week was 5782 tons, and from Greymou'th 4175 tons. A greenstone tomahawk haß been found in the. heart of a totara log near Pahiatua. How it came there is a mystery. The inspector of police has received information that a stable and contents, valued at L4O, at Lowburn, the property of Benjamin Duhig '■ have been destroyed by fire. The fire was sup posed to have been caused by rats gnawing matches which were carelessly left about. An immense kauri log was received in Auckland by a special train. The tree measuredfuUy 84ft to the first branch: Thelog measures 51ft m length, 18ft3in in girth, and over 6ft in' diameter. It contains from 13,000 ft to 14,000 ft of timber, valued at about £90. The dimensions of the log are such that it cannot be cut by the ordinary machinery in use, but will have to be cut by special appliances. '.
