OUR VOLUNTEERS.

On Saturday last the annual shooting match between the B Battery and the Dunedin Engineers took place at the Pelichet Bay range. The weather in the early part of the afternoon was dull, with a light, variable wind, but towards the close of the match rain set in, which made matters very unpleasant for the shootists. This match has been an annual fixture for some years past, and has always resulted in a victory for the Battery ; this year, however, circumstances being favourable, the Engineers scored their first win by 60 points. Owing to one of the Battery's team not putting in an appearance the match was fired nine men a-side. The conditions were 10 shots each at 200 and 500 yards. The scores were :— B Battery. 200 500 yds. yds. Tl. Gunner Alves ... ... 31 33 —64 Sergeant-major Morris ... 26 32 —58 Sergeant Baron ... ... 32 26 —58 Gunner West ... ... 28 27 —55 Lieutenant Monkman... ... 31 24 — 55 Corporal Stewart ... ... 34 21 —55 Lieutenant Chalmer ... ... 29 25 — 54 Captain Proudfoot ... ... 32 16 —48 Gunner Niven ... ... 18 10 —28 475 Engineers. The conditions were :—Ten men a-side, seven shots and one sighter at 200 yds, 300 yds, and 503 yds ; the small inner being used at 200 yds and 300 yds. A strong puffy wind with occasional heavy showers, which at 500 yds made the target quite undistinguishable, rendered good scores out of the question. The following are the scores :—

The Hussars held a special meeting on Saturday night, to consider a proposal from the Defence department to become mounted rifles. As this change would mean reclothing in karkee uniform at their own expense, and as Government sny they will not bear any of the cost, it was una ilmously decided not to accept the proposal, but to remain as cavalry until it was made compulsory for all cavalry corps in the colony to be reformed as mounted rifles. Sergeant Allan was elected lieutenant and Trooper Price appointed sergeant of the Taieri Troop, Corporal Stronach to be lance-sergeant. A sum of money was voted to be expended in fitting the building kindly granted by the City Council for use as an orderly room, ride, and gymnasia for the troop. The Hussars are to form an escort to the Governor on Saturday night next, on the occasion of the banquet.
