(From Our Own Correspondent.) Auckland", January 30. At the meeting of the New Zealand Underwriters' Association the chairman (Mr W. Tait) gave a brief sketch, of the career of this institution since its formation in June 1878, under the chairmanship of the late Mr G. P. Pierce. He said effective work had been done in the past, and the foundations of the association were laid on broad and solid lines. Mr Tait also referred to the " cutting of rates," and said that v profit was to be made out of insurance business reckless cutting of rates was surely not the way to obtain it. He urged confidence and combination, and an harmonious working together, sinking small and unimportant differences for the achievement of the general good.
