A LETTER FROM THE QUEEN.
[By Blectbic Telegraph.—Copyhight.] (Per Peess Association.) London, January 28. (Received January 28, at 8.45 p.m.) In a notification published in the Gazette the Queen thanks her subjects for their sympathy with the Royal Family in the recent bereavement.
In a letter to Mr Mathews, Home Secretary, her Majesty expresses her deep sense of the loyalty and affectionate sympathy of her subjects throughout the Empire on an occasion which was sadder and more tragical than any misfortune which had ever befallen herself and hers, as well as the nation. It was an overwhelming blow to the nation, her Majesty said, to lose so promising a Prince, and it was rendered hard for sorrow-stricken parents a dear young bride, and a fond grandmother' to bow in submission to the inscrutable decrees of Providence. The sympathy of millions had been toucmngly and visibly expressed—a fact which was deeply gratifying, and which caused her, on behalf ot herself and her children, to H prt BSj8Sj ? rOm her hearfc her g^titude to all. fehe had loved the Duke of Clarence as a son and the sympathy evinced at his death would be a help and consolation to her. She had sustained heavy bereavements during the last 30 years, yet she earnestly prayed for health and strength that she might work for the good and happiness of her dear country and empire while her life lasts.
