CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

MESSRS STRONACH BROTHERS AND MORRIS' STORES.

The recently established firm of Stronach Brothers and Morris, successors to the former firm of Stronach and Son, have at the beginning of this week removed into premises that have been erected for them at the corner of Crawford, Police, and Vogel streets. The building is of one storey, with a frontage of 9Wt to Crawford street and of 90ft to Police street. At present it is erected with a temporary end, so that it maybe extended at any time to Vogel street, to which thoroughfare the site runs back. In the meantime a shed for hides will be erected on the Vogel street frontage. The building is a brick structure, roofed withcorrugated iron. The roof is built in three bays, running east to west, and one sideof each bay is built at a sharper angle than the other and glazed with coloured glass, while the walls inside are finished in the same colour as the glass. The effect of the plan adopted in building the roof is that a south light—regarded by experts as the best possible for the lighting of wool stores—is obtained, while combined with it the scheme of colour that has been employed has the effect of displaying to the utmost advantage the texture of the fleeces exposed to view in the showroom, which is of large extent, embracing the greater portion of the floor area of the building. The wool stores have concrete floors, and there are main entrances from Crawford and Vogel streets, with a courtway extending right through. The offices are arranged at the corner of Crawford and Police streets, with a separate entrance from Police street. On entering the public office—a commodious, well-lighted apartment— is straight ahead, and from the passage that conducts to it doors open into a private office on the right and into a waiting and sample room on the left. At the back of the public office is a lavatory, tho door into which opens out of the wool store. The premises are well lighted throughout, and seem to be admirably adapted for their purpose. Ventilation is provided by castiron gratings all round the foundations of the building. The plans were prepared by Mr N. Y. A. Wales, and the contractors were Messrs White and Arnold, who have executed their work satisfactorily and expeditiously. They were bound down to complete their contract very quickly on account of the wool sales coming on, aud they finished well up to time.
