SAVED FROM DROWNING. The four-masted ship Kilbrannan, which was here on her maiden trip some four years since, is still commanded by Captain M'Callurn, and to wjat gentleman s presence of mind is due the life of one of the apprentices, William Galloway, a native of South Dunedin, who was washed overboard on a wild night about 600 miles south ?L +t Cape, ? f • Good H °Pe on February 8, 18S)1, the vessel being on a passage from Philadelphia to Hiego, Japan. Her position at noon that day was lat. 44.1 S., long. 14.4 E., and at 8 p.m. there was a strong westerly wind with a very high sea, when the lad Galloway, who had been sent into the main rigging, was half-way up the ratlines unhooking a block from the main sheet, fell overboard. Captain M'Callum, who was standing aft, observed,.the lad fall and at once tnrew nim a lifebuoy as he was being swept astern of the ship on the top of a big wave. The ship was promptly brought to the wind and a Boat lowered and sent away in charge of the chief officer. They pulled round for about an hour without success although from time to time they heard the hoarse cries of the boy, and were about fr m in«? 10 search in despair, when Mr Loalfleet (the n,ate) heard a feeble moan, pK™;™ i"^-^ ey.es- discerned Galloway nlS g, ! f he}^ wyJn ihe trough of the sea wnU v the vboat s bow- He was soon on board the ship, where every attention was paid him. The boy stated that when he rose to the t^ Ct- V\ alhn/' J? he shiPs I!GWs went away from him like a flash. Luckily the water was very black, enabling him to see the lifebuoy thrown by Captain M'Callum: He reached out and rested his hands on it, and it turned over quite naturally and fell over his shoulders, and as soon as he got his arms over it he stopped paddling. The buoy came none too soon, as the lad was tired out, and his lower limbs were numbed from the waist downwards. The seabirds, both albatrosses and mollyhawks, swooped down on him again and again, causing the poor noy to think they would drive their beaks into his skull. Luckily for him his moans were heard by the chief officer, and he was picked up by the boat and taken on board his ship. Galloway is a nephew of Mr J. Galloway, who formerly kept tne Glasgow Piehouse in Princes street, Dunedin his maternal aunt being Mrs J. Watson, of Constitution street, Port Chalmers.
