CUSTOM HOUSE SQUARE.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sin,—l notice by the report of the City Council meeting in your last issue that a proposal to form a footpath across Princes street to the Colonial Bank corner has buen referred to the Public AVorks Committee for consideration and report. I should like space to make a suggestion for the consideration of the committee in'this connection. It is, that the whole of Custom House square, including Princes street from the Post Office at Water street corner down to AVise's corner and thence to the Telegraph Office, be paved with wooden cubes. I am quite aware that this would entail an expenditure of a considerable sum of money, but I think it will be generally admitted that no work could be undertaken which would make such a permanent improvement to the city. The locality indicated is really the heart of Dunedin, and from it visitors obtain their first impressions of the place, and first impressions are certainly n°* easily obliterated. For seven months out ot the 12—to put it at a low computation— these must bo anything but favourable, as a dirtier crossing place than Custom House square and its adjuncts does not exist in Dunedin in wet weather, The prope? paving of this comparatively small part of the thoroughfare of Dunodin would give the city as a whole a much, cleaner- appearance, aß fl would go far to prevent ihe remsufta mads by visitors From the otssr colonies as to tho dirty state of the streets on their return to theii- own places of residence. Trnsting the eoffimitteo will give the matte th&isf earnest CDilsidctn-jioh,— I am, fed,, Duaoais, January «Jli AMSXWfci
