THE HARVEST.

Sydney, January 22, (Received January 22, at 12.30 a.m.)

The preliminary report of the Government statisticians on the wheat harvest is to the effect that it is, generally speaking, disappointiug. The yield is estimated at 3,900,000 bushels, giving an average of t 12'12 bushels to the acre. The crops, almost everywhere, are "Reported to be patchy, but the quality, generally, is good. Prices range from 2s 9d to 4s 7d, but the average obtained by the farmers is 4s 2d delivered. It is estimated that the colony will have to import 3,750,000 to 4,000,000 bushels.

Kerr, the Australian champion cyclist, has sailed for New Zealand, where he intends to compete at the champion athletic meeting in Christchurch.

Captain Carpenter, of the Costa Rica, who was arrested by the Dutch authorities on a charge of wrecking, has arrived here. He alleges that in 1887 he picked up the derelict Prah on the high seas, and a small amount of salvage was taken out of her. When he arrived at Tomato he was arrested and held prisoner for three months, and then released without any explanation. The present whereabouts of the Costa Rica are unknown.. Caj> tain Carpenter proceeds to Sydney this week to seek redress.
