OMNIUM GATHERUM.

NEWS, GOSSIP, AND ADS. The entries for the Wellington Regatta close on the 19th inst. It has been decided to hold a regatta in the upper harbour at Dunedin. I^The Governor and party arrived at Wanaka on Wednesday from an overland trip from the West Coast. In anadvertisement in another column some interesting information relative to the Remington typewriter will be found. Twenty-five years ago practically all writing was done with the pen. Twenty years ago but little had been accomplished by the manufacturers of typewriters, so far as getting the machines into general use was concerned; but (says an American paper) for the past 15 years there has been a demand for typewriters which has been increased until it has reached gigantic proportions. Not so very many years ago the manufacturers of the Remington typewriter reacheda point where the demand warranted their making 80 machines per week, which was then thought to be a wonderful production. To-day the Remington factory is turning out about 100 machines per day, and their facilities are being increased to such an extent that they will soon be enabled to manufacture 1000 per week. Taking into consideration the fact that there are 20 different makes of typewriters to-day where there was one a few years ago, such an increase is quite remarkable. The sole importers are Messrs Stott and Hoare, of 20 Temple Court, Melbourne. •

One hundred and two Krupp guns for horse artillery, which recently reached Canton, having been ordered by the late Viceroy, Chang Chiktung, for the defence of the coast, have been declared by Li Hung Chang, the new Governorgeneral, to be useless for the purpose, on account of the extreme dampness of the climate, which is likely to rust the guns, the unsuitability of the coast for the projected system of defence, and the impossibility of finding provender for the requisite number of horses.
