SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

(Fkom Our Own Correspondent.) Auckland, January 14, THE STRATFORD ROUTE.

Mr Hursthouse, Government Surveyor, has made arrangements with the party representing the Railway League for the journey over the Stratford route. It has been decided to start from Auckland on Monday to Te Kuiti, going on next morning by horse as far as the Ohura Valley, then to walk between 40 and 50 miles on the track for Stratford, each member of the party carrying his own swag. Thirty miles from Stratford the party will be met by settlers with saddle horses to convey them the rest of the journey. It is expected that at least nine days will be spent on the road. The party will consist of the Hon. Mr Cadman, Mr Hursthouse, C.E., and guide, Messrs Lawrie and Palmer, M.H.R.'s, the league will be represented by Mr P. Oliphant, Mr Wilson, C.E., and probably by another member of the league, Mr Alfred Kidd, city councillor. A STRANGE REQUEST. A singular application has been made to the City Council —viz, a lady has applied for the post of dog-catcher, at present held by the celebrated William Geirge Garrard. Her letter is as follows:—"if you adhere to the reduction of the dog tax you will require a person of strict impartiality to send in the names of those keeping dogs without a license. To avoid putting you to this expense I offer my services, and hope that neither my sex nor my wish to assist in some good cause without remuneration will prevent you from appointing me to the office." The City Council to-night declined to accede to the lady's wishes either on the score of women's rights or retrenchment.

Wellington, January 14. APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNOR, I am indebted to the courtesy of the Premier for a copy of the cable message which he has sent to the Agent-General. It runs as follows : "Government desire information name proposed Governor before appointment." THE REVENUE. The quarterly revenue returns are out, but call for no fresh comment. I dealt with the matter fully some days ago, and a substantial, surplus is still practically certain.

The plans prepared for the theatre which is about to be erected in the Prater, at Vienna, for the International Exhibition of Theatres, organised by the Princess Metternich, have been approved of, and the building will be forthwith commenced. It will contain 1500 spectators, and plays in all languages will be performed in it.

—A wealthy syndicate has been organised in Kansgs City to lay mains throughout the city for the purpose of supplying houses with air— cold air in the summer and warm nir in the winter and warranted to. be charged with a suitable supply of oxygen,
