THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
The Royal Society of New South Wales offers its medal and L 25 for the best communication (provided it be of sufficient merit) containing the results of original research or observation upon each of the following subjects :— To be sent iv not later that Ist May 1892 — On the iron ore deposits of New South Wales. On the effect which settlement in Australia has produced upon indigenous vegetation ; especially the depasturing of sheep and cattle. On the coals aud coal measures of Australasia. To be sent in not later than Ist May 1893 — Upon the weapons, utensils, and manufactures of the aborigines of Australia and Tasmania. On the effect of the Australian climate upon the physical development of the Australianhorn population. On the injuries occasioned by insect pests upon introduced trees. * To be sent in not later than Ist May 1894.— On the timbers of New South Wales, with speci-ii reference to their fitness for use m construction, manufactures, and other similar purposes On the raised sea beaches and kitchen middens on tbe coast of New South Wales. On the aboriginal ?o.k carvings and paintings in JJ\ew South Wales, The competition is in !lo way confined to members of the society, nor to residents in •_us.r_.lia, but is open to all without any restriction whatever, excepting that a prize wll not be awarded to a member of the council for the time being; neither will an award be matte for a mere compilation, however meritorious in its way. The communication, to be successful, jmust be either wholly or in part the result of original observation or research on the part ot (the contributor. The society is sensible that the money value of the prize will uot repay an investigator for the expenditure of his tune and labour, but it is hoped that the honour will be regarded as a sufficient inducement and row aril. The successful papers vill be published m the society's annual volume. Fifty reprint copies will be furnished to the author fife of expense. A motto must be used instead of the writers r»ame, anel each paper must be accompani.ei by a sealed envelope bearing the motto outstue, and containing the writer's name and address ►inside.
