ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A sad drowning fatality occurred at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon. Robert Higman, the local captain of the Salvation Army, with another member of the Army named Roh.-rt Hepburn, were bathing in the public baths. After being in the water a few minutes lligman suddenly sank. His companion endeavoured to rescue him by means of the lifebuoy, but was unsuccessful, and then culled tor assistance. Two lads named Holden responded to the call, and diving to the bottom su.-c. .-.led ill getting Higmali out of Ihe water. Dr Drysdale and' Sergeant Neill were quickly injattendauce, but found life was extinct. Mr lligman was a man of about 43 years of age, and leares a widow and three children. He was a quiet, unassuming man, and much respected in Port Chalmers.
The dead body of a man was found in one of the coal bunkers of the R.M.S. Merkara, lying alongside the coal hulk at Thursday Island. The body was identified as that of Alexander Smith, aged 36 years. It appears that the deceased arrived from England hy the same vessel on her last voyage; but finding the climate unsuitable and the work on the fortifications, where he was employed, too heavy, he determined to return home as a stowaway. As no coal was required tv be plai-ed in the hunkers the previous night, the apertures leading thereto were closed, and Smith died from sull'ocatiou.
