OBITUARY

London, December 8. (Received December 8, at 10.30 a.m.)

Sir Arthur Blvth, Agent-general for South Australia ; aged 68.

Sir Arthur Blyth, C.P.., K.C.M.G., born at Birmingham in 1823, arrived in Adelaide 539, and engaged in commercial pursuits in 1861. He entered the Legislative Council in 1858, and took a prominent part in enlarging the suffrage and settling the constitution, lie held oilice as Comniissioiier of AVorks from 1858 to 1860, and as Treasurer from ]S|il to 18(i3. He Mas Premier from August 186*1 to March 1865. 1 n 1877 he was appointed as Agent-general.

A ROYAL BETROTHAL, (Received December 8, at 7.30 p.m.)

Princess Victoria of Tock, who is betrothed to the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, on returning to London*' received a warm public greeting. The Queen visited Marlborough House to congratulate the young people. The interval before the marriage takes place will be a short one.

The Admiralty approve of Lord Scott's action in the Mildura inquiry.

FARMERS' .FEDERATION.

The farmers' clubs of the United Kingdom are forming a federation to protect themselves against the demands of the labourers.

THE STANDARD BANK.

The Scottish deposits in the Standard Bank, which suspended recently in Melbourne, amount to £200,000, the owners- being chiefly residents of Edinburgh aud Glasgow. The London directors profess the utmost confidence in the stability of the institution, and have received many assurances of support both from depositors and shareholders.

TRADE RETURNS,

The imports during the month have increased by £7,600,000, and the exports have decreased by £2,250,000. The increase of imports is chiefly in grain.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

It is reported that Sir AY. Sendall, Governor of Barbadoes, will succeed Sir AY. Robinson as Governor of Western Australia.

TIIE REVOLT IN CHINA,

Honiikono, December 7,

(Received December 8, at 10.30 a.m.)

A battle lias taken place at Chun Kiang between the Government troops and the insurgents. Tho former were 4500 strong, and the latter 3000. After a stubborn light the insurgents were defeated with 1100 killed.

During the recent outbreak the occupants of the orphanages were not spared, and their bodies wero devoured by pariah dogs.
