GAVERSHAM LITERARY SOCIETY.

There was a large attendance fit the meeting of the Caversham Literary and Debating Society ou Thursday night, when a paper on the Red Hill and Awaruiti Districts was read. The paper was compiled by Mr R. Paulin, but that gentleman being at present iv Tonga, it was read by Mr James Rennie. The Red Hill and Awaruiti districts extend over that portion of the west coast of Otngo between Martin's Bay, to the north of Milford Sound, and Big Bay. Mr Paulin, who, with a party of men, explored this country, described the scenery and bis experiences in a very graphic aud interesting manner. Some of the descriptions were very good, especially those of Williamson's Flat and Cascade and Arawata rivers. The Cascade river was B»id to be one of the prettiest the writer had ever seen, somo of the cascades on it being even more imposing than the. Sutherland Falls. WilliainsouV Flat was referred to in terms of high praise, the writer stating that if it were only more accessible

it would be a splendid resort for invalids. The atmosphere of this place was so clear that at midday it was no uucommon sight to see the stars in the heavens. The paper was listened to with close attention and waa frequently applauded. Mr Paulin had with him in hiß travels a photographic apparatus, aud took views of all tho most interesting scenes, which he has had mounted. . The reading of the paper was varied oy the exhibition of,thcßo views by means of the limelight lantern by Mr G. H. Marsden. A bettor conception of the places described was thus conveyed to the audience than would otherwise have been tbe case. After the paper was concluded Mr Marsden eutectained the audience with a series of comic and scenic views of various parts of tho world. Before the meeting terminated votes oE thanks to Mr Paulin for his paper, and Mr Marsden for showing the view*, were carried by acclamation.
