V.R.C. MEETING. [By Blbctbic Teleqeaph.—Copybiqht.] (Pee Pbess Association.) Melbouene, July 30. (Beoelved July ao, at 11 a.m.) Some extensive commissions have been executed on the V.B.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup. All the money obtainable has been accepted about Stromboli for the Derby, and after he had been backed to win £4000 the best price about him was 4 to 1, layers being reluctant to do any more business. Psnance and Sternchaßer havo been backed for considerable sums at 10 to 1. Tirailleur has also bsen backed for the Melbourne Cup to win a fair stake. COURSING. The Oamaru Champion meeting began yesterday. The following ore the results :— OAMAKU CHAMPION STAKB. Winner JESO, and P Hayman ana Co.'s trophy j trainer of winner, a new hat (presented by Mr Masters, hatter; Dunedln); runner-up, £20, and Messrs Thomson aud Co.'a trophy; third dog, £9; three dogs, £1 e»ch. FIRST BOUND. Bluecap beat Bast Lynne Bedwood beat Jack Tar Irony beat Talnui Aiinee beat Hurrioane Blackwood beat The Jilt Stirling Maid beat Last Chance. A London cablegram announces that the Goodwood Stakes were won by Whitefeather, with Barmecide second and Vasistas third. Mr D. Cooper's Australian-bred filly Mons Meg has been scratched for the Goodwood Cup. At the annual meeting of the Winton Jockey Club it was resolved—" That this club suggest to the Metropolitan Club the adviaableness of appointing a handicapper who shall act as such for all jockey clubs raciDg under D. J.C.rules, the remuneration for such bandicappcr to be eitaer by annual tax on each club, a fixed sum per day, or by such other means as the Metropolitan Club may consider fair and reasonable, iae balauce sheet of the May meeting showed a credit balance of £26 18s 3d. The election of office-bearers for the year resulted as follows :- President, Mr B.VVilsou; vice-president, MrJ. Jack; treasurer, Mr C. D. Moore; secretary, Mr J. Wilson (re-elected). A Wellington telegram states that Mr Lingard, secretary to the Hunt Club has forwarded a letter to the Governor giving the opinion of the veterinary surgeon who examined the stag. His opinion is that the animal died from bemg too , fat internally to bo hunted. It was nearly full- j grown, and waa wild in the bush a few months ] ago. Mr Lingard expressed the regret o£ the
clab that their effort to introduce Btag-huntiDg should have had so unfortunate a termination. In reply, Lord Onalow says that he accepts with pleasure the manly and straightforward expression of regret felt by the members of the club, bat adheres to his withdrawal of patronage.
