PUBLIC MEETING AT ROSLYN
A public meeting of the residents of thi Kaikorai Valley and Roslyn districts was belt last evening in the Roslyn Council Chambers fo: the purpose of considering the advisability o forming a club on somewhat similar Hues tt those on which the South Dupedin club ii conducted. The chair was occupied by Mr A 0. Begg (mayor), and there was a fair atten dance. The Chairman briefly explained the object o: the meeting, and said that although he had n< direct hand in getting it up, at the sam6 timi he had great sympathy with the object in view and he thought that everything that would tenc to prevent the drifting of their young men into bad company was deserving of the support o everyone who had the wellbeing of the neigh bonrhood at heart. The Rev. L. Hudson said that he had mucl pleasure in being present at that meeting, am thought that some effort might be made in pro moting a elub such as was iu operation in Soutl Dunedin. He thought that perhaps if thi meeting took a conversational turn the genera! feeling would be "better brought out. The speaker said that it could be taken for grantee there were no larrikins in Boslyn and Eaikorai but if they conld prevent their young men fron becoming larrikins it would be doing a great deal. Mr Lee Smith, who was present on behalf o; the South Dunedin Club, said that he had mucl pleasure in being present and giving Bomi information in regard to the working of thi Southern Clab. The speaker then gave ai account of their progress and method of work ing. He thought that the children's educatior should not end when they had passed the Sixtl Standard, and the sooner that the Governmenl recognised this the better. Several other speakers followed, and a verj general opinion was expressed that the forma tion of a clab was desirable. ' It was ultimately agreed, on the motion ol Rev. L, Hudson, seconded by Mr Bbickell— " That a committee be appointed to bring up t scheme for the formation of such a club at i future meeting to be called within % month.' The following gentlemen were appointed i committee to carry out the objects of th< motion:—Revs. R. R. M. Sutherland, L. Hud son, Diggens, Messrs W. Y. A. Wales, A. C Begg, John Smith, Masters Brickell, Wedge F. Wilkinson, C. D. Arlidge, Lillicoe, Webster Grant, D. Torrance, and Leslie. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks t< the Mayor for presiding, and also to Mr Lei Smith for his attendance.
