CAVERSHAM LICENSING AFFAIRS.
TO THE EDITOB.
_ Sib,—Your correspondent," Square," in yonr issue of Saturday last, is " not in it" at all. He writes angrily—and ignorantly. What he says is not true!
1. It is not true that everybody was satisfied with the " do-nothing" policy of the committee. I was present at a meeting held before the election, at which grave complaints were made, I and methods of possible reform discussed. 2. It is not true that the present committee were allowed a " walk-over," on condition that they kept everything as it was, A strong desire existed to test the publio feeling, and gain such an expression of it as would stimulate and encourage the committee to action. Does Mr "Square" really think that there is no room and no need for advance and for improvement? It may be that we missed the best opportunity at the actual election. But we did the next best thing. We are both surprised and delighted with our success^ It shows a stronger and riper public opinion than we had even suspacted. And we have fairly earned the recognition awarded to us by the committee.
3. We will fight the election next time, if there is any necessity, and if by that time there is anybody to fight on the other side. And if the "ram's horn" succeeds then in rallying the friends of temperance and public morals, as it has done now, we will gain a still more glorious victory. And then we will do onr best to " square " your correspondent, whoever he is. I am, kc,,
Caversham, June 16.
