BRUCE COUNTY MATTERS. TO THE EDITOR.

ISnr,— A. no one appears inclined to reply to the letter of Mr F. A, Joseph, iv your issue of , the Sth inst, in reference to the punt at Taieri Month, I sbail take it upon myself to do so. The punt was put on the river some time ago at the joint expense of the Bruce and Taieri j County Councils, the Bruce county paying two- | thirds and Taieri one-third of the cost. The j total cost was between £700 and £800 (probably far more than it was worth). Still, I understand it has been of great service and convenience to the settlers on both sides of tho I river, Tho yearly expense of maintenance is between £40 and £50, which is paid by the Bruce county, the Taieri Council only raaint-aiu* I ing the approach on the Taieri side of the river. To erect a bridge on the site of the puut would cost several thousand pounds, which, of course, j is outiroly out of the question at the present time. I

In reference to the special rate upon the Waihola riding of the council, I fail to ascertain that the maintenance of the punt has anything whatever to do with it The rate was levied, I underetand, in order to wipe off nn old debt of the riding, and tho present special rate of Is in the pound ia to bo spread over a period of two year?, so that tbo rato is not doubled, as stated by Mr Joseph.—l am, &c,

Dunedin, June 15.
