UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present: The Vice-chancellor (Mr Justice Williams, in the chair), Messrs R. L, Stanford, E. B. Cargill, J. M'Lean, Dr Hocken, and the Hone. W. H. Beynolds and J. Fulton. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that accounts and salaries amounting to £1598 15s Id had been passed for payment.—The report was adopted. COEBESPONDENCE. The Professorial Board wrote stating that as the committee selected to wait on the counoil with reference to the appointment of a chairman would be unable to meet the council, » committee should be appointed from the council to confer with the board on the question; and also to discuss the bill proposed to be brought into Parliament for the reconstruction of tho council. —On the motion of the Hon. Mr Reynolds—the Chancellor, the Vice-chancellor, Mr Stanford, and Mr Allen were appointed a committee to consult with the board on Thursday. A number of law students wrote requesting to be exempted from the payment of the one guinea with which all students were charged over and above class fees, for the following reasonß: (1) They were led to believe that the fee was'required mainly, as a payment for the advantages whioh student's in the pursuance of their' studies derived from the University Library; (2) they, as far as their own particular studies were concerned, derived no such advantages, as the library did not as yet furnish text books on purely legal subjeots or law reports, which were wanted for the purpose of reference; (3) the Supreme Court Library was placed at the disposal of law students. Professor Gibbons, secretary of the Professorial Board, wrote stating that the board was of opinion that there was no good reason for granting the request of the law students to be exempt from payment of tho usual college fee. The fee was. not payable either solely or mainly for the use of the library, but for general university purposes, from which the law students derived benefit as well as other classeß of students. The letter from the students was received, and it was decided to decline the reque3t contained therein. "At this stage of the meeting Dr IStuart (the chancellor) entered, and the vice-chancellor vacated the chair in his favour. Professor Black wrote, in reply to the council's request for Lib class returns, stating that he had not called the roll, and had not therefore materials for each an elaborate report as the council required. He bad for various reasons considerable repugnance to call ingthe roll daily, and would not do bo unless the council strongly insisted on a task so uncoDgenial and disagreeable in itself, and so foreign to the studies pursued iv the chemistry class.—The registrar was instructed to inform Professor Black that it was absolutely necessary that the returns should be sent in. NOTICE OP MOTION. Mr Stanfoed gave notice to move—" That a sum of £69 be devoted to making a tennis court in place of the one taken by the council for building a mining school."
