Hobabt, June 9.—The B.M.S. Tongariro, from liondon, via Capetown, arrived hero at 9.30 this morning.
The s.«. Invercarglll arrived at the Eattray street wharf at 6 a.m. yesterday. Sheleft Timaru at spm. of Monday, and encountered a heavy 3. W. gale along the coast. aha brlgantlne Enterprise left the Eattray street wharf yesterday forenoon with cargo for Napier. The s.s. Invercarglll lelt Dunedln yesterday afternoon with cargo for the south. The schooner Spray was towed up to Puneoin yesterday afternoon, and commenced discharging cargo at the Bsttray street wharf. Tha Union Company's steamer Talune, from Lyttelton, arrived alongside the George Btreet pier at2p.m yesterday; a full description of this vessel has already appeared In our columns. Sue is commanded by Captain HWK Ohfitflold (late of the Mararoa) who has with him the following officers : — Mr W J Wlleon, chief; Mr J Hamcian, second; Mr;j Dawson (late of the Te Anau), third; parser, Mr H Tajlor (lateof the Wairarapa); chief engineer, MrßJDoolan; second, Mr C Smyth, third, Mr E Wallia; ohief steward. Mr Medlicott. The Talune left Lyttelton at 1.30 p.m. on the Bth inst. and enoountered a hewy S.W. gale down the coast. The Talune steamed up to Dunedin yesterday evening and waa berthed at the tongue wharf. Messis B. Napier and Sodb launched on the 11th nit., from their yard at Govao (savo The Times), the oteel twin-Bcrew steamer the Ophtr, 6700 tons, which they have built for the Orient Steam Navigation Oompanyi Her dimensions are—Length, 482 ft; breadth, Silt: and depth, 37ft. The vessel has been specially designed for the Boyal Mail service between London and Australia, and will be the largest and best appointed on the route. She has been built under Lloyd's special survey for class 100 Al, and also to meet the Admiralty requirements for armfd cruisers. The hull, which has been constructed with a cellular double bottom, is subdivided by watertight bulkheads in such a manner that although two of the compartments were filled with water the ship would •till be manageable. Two sets of triple expansion engines of sufficient power to propel the vessel at the rate of 18 knots have been fitted by the builden. Steam will bo supplied by seven oteel boilers workIng at a pressure of 1601b to the Equare inch. The passenger accommodation, which is of a superior description, has been designed speolally for the long voyage to Australia. Ail the latest appliances for working both ship and cargo have been introdnced. As the vessel left the ways the christening ceremony was performed by Miss Ella Green, daughter of the chairman of the "Orient Company.
SALE OF A STEAMER.
The Taranakl Herald says: -At the sale of Rev. Father Oassldy's interest In the p.s. Terranora, on Friday, Mr J Elliot wanted to know, in the event of DO lalo, who would have to keep the crew, who had possession of her. Mr N. King, the auctioneer, replied that be supposed the Waitsra shareholders in the boat would have to contribute their quota of the cost. Mr Samuel, who appeared for the officers and orew. Informed those interested who were present that his clients intended to keep possession of the steamer until their claim of £617 was satisfied. Mr H. Weston wanted to know what guvantee^oou'd ba given to a buyer, but Mr King made no promises, and read the Hit of known liabilities, whioh proved to ba quite a formidable array. After this Mr Weston made a bid of £50. Mr King waited for further bids, but none being forthcoming he informed those present the sheriff could not sell at that figure. Mr Weston asked the reserve, to which Mr King replied £200. Mr Weston then signified his Intention to buy the interest at that figure for Mr T. Bayly. The spectators, maDy of whom were Maoris, then dispersed.
