LECTURE ON NEW ZEALAND

The Manchester City News of the 28th Feb ruary stateß that Dr Murray Moore, of Liver pool, delivered an address on New Zealand at i meeting held in the Memorial Hall. In thi coutso of his lecture he said a good deal of th wondrous energy and restlessness of the Anglo New Zealander is. accounted for by the exhilai ating effects of the climate. Undoubtedly th North Island is the sanatorium of the Southeri Hemisphere, and the mineral springs of Rotorui a veritable Pool of Bethseda. Social life in Nev Zealand is unconventional, full of recreatior. and most enjoyable. The education system i free, compulsory, and too absolutely secular ii the lecturer's opinion, for the Bible is the onl, book excluded from the publio schools. Boy! brigades and training ships are much wantei in the colony, yet there is a market absence oJ serious crime. It needs onl; 500 policemen to keep in order a populatio; of 662,000 people, including 42,000 Maori! spread over an area of 104,000 square milei There is certainly poverty in the towns of Ne\ Zealand, and there are many struggling settler who barely maintain themselves, but there is n pauper class as yet, and no casual wards. Out relief is given kindly and wißely, and the law are just, humane, and well administered. Nei Zealand is a paradise for Mary Ann. Recentl, an advertisement of a servant for a plac appeared in a New Zealand paper stating tha " none but a respeotable mistress, who wishes t leave her servant in uninterrupted discharge o the duties, need apply."—(Laughter.) N clerks, shopmen, factory hands, doctors, lawyer! clergymen, teachers, or architects are wanted ii the colony at present; only farmers wit! oapital. The lecture was freely illustrated by series of splendid lantern views of the country.
