From Westport to Cape Campbell she experienced strong winds with heavy seis, and from thence fine weather to arrival. The returns relating to shipping on the great American lakes show very remarkable changes since 1886. The aggregate tonnage increased from 634,65 a in 1886 to 828,360 ;in JIB9O, and the estimated value of vesaels from 30,597,450d01 in 1886 to 58,128,500d0l in 1890. while the number of vesßelß inoreased only from 1997 to 2055, ihowlng a remarkably rapid substitution of larger and more costly for Btnaller and leis expensive vessels, the estimated increase in value being far more rapid than in either tonnage or Dumber of vessels. Mr Atmer, O. 8., of Hambnrg. has invented a contrivance by which coal can be Bhipped or dißcharged with great rapidity. He employß the ordinary deck winches for the purpose, but the whips are managed In an ingenious manner. He ha. fitted seven Bteamerswith bis apparatus, and three others are under adaptation, One of the steamers, the Prinz Wilhelm, of 1600 tons register, has 13 whips driven by four machines, or one to eaoh hold. The Bteam is taken from the donkey boiler, and the four hatches are worked simultaneously. Inttead of four men to eaoh whip, one only iB required. The Mittelweg (s), of 1400 tonß, has 10 whips, and loads in seven hours, with 60 men instead of 90 as formerly. Coal, grain, phosphate, manures, and all homogeneous cargoes can be worked in the sanfe manner. Mr Atmer also provides for the same kind of gear in barges or flats alongside for heaving np cargoes over a shlp'B side. The cost of fitting the whins under the patented system Is said to be comparatively inexpensive and quickly repays itself.
