WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this County Council , was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday, at which there were present; The chairman (Mr A. D. Bell), and Crs T. Dent, C. S. Hay, J. Hartstonge, jun,, D. Kennedy, T. Bluir, A. H'Lareu, £>. M'Leod, and J. A. Robertson. DEPUTATION. Mr John Caldwell appeared in reference to the district road leailiog past his property, which he represented was obstructed by Mr James Neil go that he could not get his cattle to and from water.—Crs M'Laben and M'Leod, who had been appointed a committee at the last meeting to inspect the road, reported that they found it was of no use to any one. Neil had applied to the council to erect a swing gate on the road, and there was nothing to prevent Caldwell from taking his cattle to water. To remove the gate might possibly involve the council ia further expense. The committee were of opinion that Mr Caldwell had no grievance to complain of.—The report was received, and the council decided to take no action in the matter. PETITION. Six ratepayers in the Goodwood riding petitioned the council to grant a deviation of the road line starting from the corner of section SO, known as Cushnan'e, leadiDg through a corner of Wright's, to culvert. The petitioners expressed the opinion that to make the road as at present eurveyed would cost more money than the deviation, and would never make a road with a suitable grade. If the council agreed to grant the deviation and build the culvert, the petitioners offered to form the road from the culvert to section 50.—The council declined the application, but agreed to vote the sum of £5 towards the improvement of the existing road. FINANCE.

The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts for the month amounting to £150 13i 83.—Received and adopted. inspkctoe's repoets. The Inspector reported having examined the old rood leading to the Taieri Lake station. The length of m»in toad to repair would be eight miles, bub there would not ba much difficulty in carrying out the work, tussocking being the most important, and to shifi it from one Bide of the track to the other. If anything was done to the road it would he batter to do it past M'Lean'a at north end of pre emptive light into Moonlight, to giva access to tha flat and Strath Taieri at the same time. Tver,; would not be much difference iv the cost. Sis (lays per mile by an experienced surfaceman would do it, with a few dsyß with a team cirtfug slones for small culverts. The work snou'd ba clone at once or left until spring, as it could not ba done during frost. The road from Hyde bridge to the Cottesbrook bridge was cow opened, Dodd's contract being finished —Ueceived. The culverts and water table 3in the Goodwood riding had been cleaned out, and aome 9in pipes were required, none btiog available at present.—Received, and the inspector authorised to obtain a supply of pipe.*. CORRESPONOENCE.

Mr R. Claffy, Macraes, wrote stating that as he was fencing in section 2, block I, Highlay, no passable track for drays would exist, as the road ran through section ?, block I, and crossed a gully starting at his section. Hislop, manager of the Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company, Duuedin, applied on behalf of Mr R. fluuter to ascertain if ha wa3 not eutitled to any rebate of the £6 paid by him towards expenses of the proposed closing of roads through his land.— Referred to the chairman. Tha Treasury, Wellington, forwarded intimation that the sum of £38 12', golJfields revenue, hsd been remitted to the credit of the council at the Oolooial B*uk, Palrnerston.—Received. Mr W. B. Griffin, Macraes, wrote, in reply to letter received from the council intimating the decision re petition to sink public well, expressing regret of the petitioners that the council could not Beo their way to grant the prayer of the petition, as the clamour and cry was for water, nud that it wa3 necessary the people should have pure water for themselves and their cattle, which at present was unobtainable, except by carting from the well at the lower township, a distance of a mile, He also poiutert out that, seeing the council were good enough to

provide tho lower township with a well' tho petitioners considered they should bo treated in the samo way, and should not bo subject to exceptional treatment, nml were aa jiißtly entitled to a public well without subsidy no thor neighbours. Tho petitioners wero under tho impicßsion that tho well would not cost more than £20, and they thereforo asked tho council to reconsider their former decision anil grnnt tho request.
