ITALIAN SUCCESSES.

A despatch received at Borne from Massowah states that a force of 600 men from the district of Agameh have made a raid upon Endeca, a place on the frontier of the Italian territory, near the Bari Peninsula. Captain Pinelli, the officer in command of the garrison at Araftt, marched against the invaders with a company of native infantry and a detachment of native irregulars. The enemy was surprised by Captain Pinelli s force near Aqualat, and defeated in two succesi ye engagements, losing 200 men, including Askeas, their leader, and two chiefs of lower rank. The enemy also lost heavily in wounded and prisoners. Of the Italian force the native infantry had one man wounded, and the native irregulars two killed and sis wounded.

The expression " up a tree "—that is, being in a difficulty—comes from America, and is taken from racoon hunting. The racoons, when started from the cornfields by the dogs, make for the woods and climb up the trees. They are then practically caught—either the troes being felled or the racoons shaken off. —In 1887 only 200 tons of sugar beets were grown in the United States, while last year (1890) the quantity waß over 12,000. In 1890 the American Government imported 50 tons of beet seed from Europe, and over 2000 farmers applied for it, so an extended cultivation is certain.
