COMMITTING A BANKRUPT TO PRISON.

The protracted bankruptcy case of James M'Crennor advanced another stage (says the Press) at the sitting of the District Court at Ashbuiton on Thursday. When his Honor Judge Ward took his seat on the bench, Mr Bussell said he was afraid he should have to ask for an adjournment, as he found it impossible to keep his witnesses togethe» unless they were locked up. The court bailiff had been out all night after one witness, and when this one was called it was some time before he appeared. M'Crennor was then called, but the answer was "No appearance, your Honor!" He, howevei, walked leisurely into the court in the course of about 10 minutes, pleading, in answer to his Honor, ignorance of the time of day. James Johnston was then called, but the answer was that he had gone home, expressing his intention the previous evening of not attending. Hie Honor made an order calling upon Johnston to show cause why he should not be fined £20 for failing to answer his subpoena. Johnston strolled into the Court a little later on, and seemed not a Jlittle astonished when told he had been fined £20. He made an explanation about having had to drive 16 or 18 miles, an excuse which was generously accepted by his Honor. The outcome of the charges preferred against M'Crennor was a sentence oE four months' imprisonment for disposing of horses with intent to defraud the Mercantile Finance Company, his Honar characterising M'Orennor's conduct as grossly dishonest.
