DOUGHERTY'S ISLAND, TO THE EDITOR.
Sib, —Since tho correspondence regarding tho above appeared in your paper I have been informed by a well-known gentleman (whose name I will disclose to anyone interested in the matter) that tho late Captain Whitson, when in command of the Dunedin (somo yoars ago), sighted this island aud reported to my informant that there were plenty of seals there. In view of this information, what shall we say of your shipping reporter's statement? —"As regards tho two fine ships Marlborough and Dunedin," quoted by Mr Jones, "it is hardly possible they could have been driven in that direction. Suoh a thing may have occurred, bufc it is highly improbable." I merely add this to my former correspondence with a desire to give all the information I know of; and only hope that others may tako the trouble to publish any information they may glean respecting any out-of-the-way places.—l am, kc, John Maitland Jones. Dunedin, February 17.
