THE KAITANGATA RAILWAY AND COAL COMPANY'S PICNIC.
Tho employes of the Kaitangata Railway and Coal Company held their fifth annual picnic at Stirling on Friday. Tho weather was all that could bo desired. The party, numbering between 1400 and 1500, left Kaitangata at 10 a.m. On arrival at Stirling it wes found that Mr Smith had not only given tho pleasnre-seekera tho use of his ground, bat had also given a large supply of milk. Lunch was partaken of, after which a start was made with the programme of 21 events. Mr W. M. Shore superintended the children's^ amusements, and again proved himself tho right man in the right plaeo. The committee were very successful in carrying oat the sports, and the secretary (Mr H. Douglass) is to bo complimented for the energy displayed in the performance of his duties. Tho following were the officers:— * President: Mr W. M. Shore. Committee of Management: Messrs J. Shore, W. Twelve entries—A Rogers 1, P Walsh 2, T Hannah & Young Ladies' Race, 150 yds. First prize, cabinet (presented by Messrs Hitchon and Poole); 2nd, plush bag (presented by Mr Farquhar). First prize, bronze Jampj 2nd, toilet sot; 3rd, half a sheap (presented by Mr Henderson). Ten entries—H DousUs 1, P Welsh 2. A Picture (presented by Mr 3 Robertson) to the oldest lady on the Qeld—Mrs J Olnrk, 77 yearn. A Walking Stick (presented by Mr J Bobertson) to the oldest gentleman on the field—Mr Smith, 77 years, CONCBET. Tho directors invited their employes and friends to a concert in M'Gov6ra's hall at night. The leading musical and vocal talont of Dunedin were engaged, and the treat wa3 the best ever given to a Kaitangata audience. Every item on the programme was heartily appreciated, Mr Reunert especially rsceiving a welcome which either Sims Reeves or Santley would have been envious of had they been present. Mr T. Brydone presided, and returned thanks en behalf of tho company. The Hon. T. Fergus and Mr J. Nicholson thanked tho directors for the very excellent treat they had given. Refreshments wore supplied during tho interval to the ladies present.
