[Admiral David Dickson Porter wrb bora in Pennsylvania, June 8,1814. Hb waß tile youugest son of Commodore David Porter, who commanded tljo Kssex frigate in the war with Great Britain in 1812-14. Ho entered the 6»rvlco as midshipman in February 1829, and served in the Mediterranean until 1835, when ho was employed for several years In the coast Burvey and river explorations, nnd became a
lleutenunt in 1811. At the oloao of 1845 he waa placed on special duty at the Obsorvntory at Washington, which position he resigned In 1819 In order to take part In the Mexican wnr. At the outbreak of tho civil war, in 1881, ho was promoted to the nink of commander, and at tho beginning of 1802 tlio mortar fleet for the reduction of tho forte bolow New Orleans was placed under his orders, tho entire naval force being commanded by Oommodoro Farragut. After the capture of New Orleans ha proceeded up the river with hlB fleet, and was ongeged In the unsuccessful doge of Vlcksburg, which was rniied July 22,1882. In the summer of IBBJi. during the second siege of Vickalmrg, ho bombarded tho works, and rendered material assistance to Gouoral Grant, who commanded the besieging army, until tho occupation of that strODghold, July 4. For this ho was made rearadmiral. Admiral Sorter was employed in Eeveral Important expeditions eipeclally in tho two combinod attacks on Fort Fiaher, which commands the approaches to Wilmington, North Carolina. 3he unit of theso, at tho close of 1864, miscarried. Tho Bccond (In January, 180S) was completely successful. Admiral Porter was advanced to the rank of viceadmiral July 25, 1880. From 1866 to 1870 he was superintendent of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Onthedeath of Admiral Farragut, October 17,1870, he was advanced to the rank of admiral, which carries with it the command of tho entire navy of the.United States, subject only to the troeldent.
