THE MISSING STEAMER KAKANUI.
A FRUITLESS SEARCH.
(Pke United Phefs Association.)
Bluff, February 14,
The Hinemoa arrived at 7.15 a.m. Captain Fairchild reports having made the circuit of the Campbell, Auckland, and Snares Islands, and searched every nook Rnd corner in them, but without finding the slightest trace of any wreckage on them. There can, therefore, now be little doubt that the Kakanui has gone down with all hands. The one chance remaining is that her people may have been rescued by a homeward-boudd ship. Captain Fairchild forwarded the following argent telegram to Danedin on Saturday morning (a similar message being also sent to the Marine depsrtment at Wellington):— "Bluff, February 14. " The Collector of Customs. "We searched the Auckland and Campbell Islands; went all round both islands, into every harbour and bay, but saw nothing of anything from the Kakanui. I am afraid there is no hope left. " John Faibchxld." THE RELIEF FOND. ' Au Invercargill telegram states that the J matinee performance given^by the London Bell- " ringers on Saturday afternoon, in aid of the : relief fund, realised £18. The Mayor of Invercargill has called a public meeting for Tuesday ' to taks steps to)relieve the distress caused to the 3 families of those lost by the disaster.
As a result of the negotiations of the Cycling Club with the committee of the Kaksnui Relief Fund, it is probable that an arrangement will be come to for holding tho sports next Saturday a little earlier than was at first proposed, and the fete a little later —say about 4 o'clock. This would enable the public to visit both the Carisbrook ground and the grounds at Montecillo, and thus materially augment the contributions to the fund. The Relief Committee will consider the whole matter this eveniug.
At a meeting of the Amusements Committee on Saturday evening representatives attended from the city bands, Captain Robertson, of the Fire Brigade, being also present. It was agreed, after discussion, to postpone the concert for the present on account of the multiplicity of- entertainments being organised just now, and to accept the offer of the directors of the Caledonian Society, who gave the free use of the grounds for an evening this week. It was decided to give a grand promenade concert on Friday night, all the city and suburbin bands having volunteered their services. The bands are to tneot in the Octagon and, headed by a torchlight procession of the firemen, will march to the grounds, where a concert and dance programme will be gone through. A pyrotechnic display, a tug of war, and other items, will go to make up what ought to prove an attractive programme, not one of the least interesting features of which will be the massing of the bands for the performance of a march. The enthusiasm in tho matter shown by the bandmasters present augurs.well for_tlie—sue-— cess of the entertainment.
