Sydney, February 14.
(Received February 14, at 11.40 a.m.)
The New South Wales Government have issued 700 invitations to the federal banquet to be given to delegates and others in the Centennial Hall on the evening of March 2. Invitations have been issued to the mayors of all the metropolitan cities in the colonies, to members o£ the Legislature in New South Wales, to judges of the Supreme Court s naval and military officers, professors of the University, and leading citizens.
Sir Hercules Robinson, writing to Sir Henry Parkes on the question of federation, considers that the Customs tariff and other difficult points must be left to the Federal Parliament co deal with. He apprehends that it would be impossible to have a uniform tariff beforehand, but by a give-and-take policy the Federal Parliament could easily come to a decision which would be acceptable to all. He concludes: —" Perhaps New South Wales would have to adopt a little Protection, and little as I like Protection it would be a cheap price to pay for the union."
