DEATH OF GENERAL SHERMAN.

William Teouraseh, was born at Lancaster. Ohio, on February 18.1820. He graduated at the Military Academy at West Point in JSIO. served in the Florida war, in the war with Mexico, and Usewhere. until 1853, when lie resigned his commission. When the civil war oommenced, however, ho was commissioned as colorel of a regiment of infantry, and commanded a brigade of volunteers atthebattla of Bull Run, and was made brigadlorgenoral of volunteers. He received li(b commission as brigadier-general in the regular army In July 1863. In October 1863 he succeeded General Grant ss commander of the department of the Tennosiea. In March 1861, when Grant was made lieutenantgeneral. Sherman sucoeeo'ed him as commander of the military division of tho Mississippi, comprising the entire south-west, and organised an elf ctive army of 100,000 men to operate ngainst General J. H. Johnston. On May 2, 1864, simultaneously with the advance of General Grant in the east, Shorman entered on the invasion of Georgia, and, after a number of battles, received the capitulation of Atlanta, September 2, 1801. On November 15.1881. having sent about twoJiftba of his force, under Genoral Thomas, to repel General Hoods mo/emenb into Tenne3see, he marched Bvuthward to the asa, with a force of 60,000 men, in less than a month passing over about 300 miles with hi» army, without any resistance, till he readied Fort M'Alliater, below Savannah, which he captured after a brief action December 13. Savannah surrendering December 21, 18.14. He fought two battles in North Carolina. March 10 and 20-21,1865, occupied Goldnboro', March 23. capSured linleigh, April 13, and received General Johnston's surrender, on April 28, ' JBSSS, upon the same terms as hod been accorded to the army under General I.cc. Tho surrender vlrtuilly included All tho Confederate forces in the field, and irought the war cf secession !o a close. General Sherman had beeu mads a major-general in the United States army for his Atlanta campaign, ond after the close of the war continued in charge of the military division of the Mississippi for more than a year. In 1860 General Sherman was advanced to ilnitenant-Kenernl, the command of the military division of tho Mississipl being assigned to him, and, oa the accession of General Grant to the presidency in 1369, be was made general of tho array. The obllg.-.tory retirement of. General Sherman from the command of the army, en account of age, took plnoe in February 1881. Since then he resided at St, Louis.—Men of the Time.
