MAORI HILL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary maetlng of the Maori HUI Borough Council was held last night, and attended by tbe mayor (MrD. Brent), Crs Thomson, Tanner, Aitken, Long, Lawson, Rossbotham, Bain, Powell, Herdman, and Mitchell. C!OP.BES__'ONDBfiCU;. The town clerk of Dnnedln wrote acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the counoil, suggesting that the City Counoil should take Into consideration the whole question of the maintenance of tlie Town Belt roads and footpaths, and Btatlng that the City Counoil preferred to deal with eaoh oase on its merits as it arose. Cr Rossbotham said he thought tho Oity Council treated that council with scant courtesy. In the summertime, when the oity ran short of water they got permission from the Maori Hill Council to take the water from the Leith. The borough council In granting them that permission virtually made tbem a preseut of hundreds of pounds, and yet the City Council wonld not make any concession to the biriugh when asked to do so with regard to tho Town Belt roads. The letter was then reoelved. Bishop Nevill wrote, with reference to the formation of the road leading to the main road towards Pine Hill. Btaling lhat he thought it would be sufficient if the council spread metal over the existing surface of that portion of the road between the main road and the first crossing of the stream, and made a footpath along one side. The metal should be 20ft lr. width. If the council proceeded at once to carry out the suggestion he was willing to receive their directions as to what should bo done with the portion of the road from the stream to the little bridge, and If possible, to undertake the oarrying out of that work himself 'on Buch terms as might be agreed upon as to proportionate remission of rates. He would also make a donation in money—probnbly equnl to one-fifth of the total cost.—lt waß resolved that the olerk be Instructed to send the Bishop a oopv of the following clause contained In the Works Committee's report of July 2 ln regard to the matter i- " With reference to that part of the Leith road to the Bishop's gate, your committee would recommend that If Bishop Nevill be willing the council should enter Into a contract with hlm by which he will form the road to a proper.grade and full width, make a fontpath on one side, and build a bridge, and keep the whole in proper repair to the satisfaction of the borough Inspector for four years for the Bum of £50; to be paid at the rate of £12 10s per year."

The Finance Committee reported that there was a debit balance of £126 17s 9d at the bank. They recommended that accounts amounting to .640 2s 8d bo passed for payment.—Adoptel. The Inspector reported that the Leith road from Harbour's bridge to the Town Belt, and Woodhaugh street, were in some places very rough, and required a coat of metal to be put on, or some of the large stones taken out.—The inspector was Instructed to repair the road. The Works Committee recommended that the ohief surveyor be asked whether a settlement of the proper frontage of Wiliiamstown to High street -was likely to be arrived at, as the council intended to form a new footpath at once; that arrangements be made with Mr Driver and Mr Robertson for cutting

off a little from the corners of their properties, and that Cr Herdman be authorised to negotiate for that purpose; that Mr E. Hay be instruct el to prepare plans and specifications ; that the sum of (£250 bo n laced to tho crfdit of a separate account at fche bank for the purpose of kerbing and channelling the south-east Bide of High Btreet from tho Town Tielt to the top of Driver's road. With reference to Henry street cutting, the committee reported that they had held a meeting on the ground with the property owners, when the following arrangement was mutually approved of:—"That the street bo cut down to the depth of 2ft opposite the boundary between the properties of Mrs Mary Binnle and Mr Eobert Shepherd, and opposite Mr Archibald Binnle's gate; the grade to run out opposito Mrs WiHon's corner at one end, and Mrs Pateman's property at the other: that the gales to the properties of Mrs Mary Einnie MrE. Shepherd, and Mr A. Binnle be lowered, and, the approncheß made otherwise aB good as now at the expense of the council.. That the banSs be cut away close to tho boundarlea of the sections, and the street formed to the full width and a proper channel formed. That guarantees and Indemnities be given and taken in writing with Mr 3 Binnie, Messrs Shepherd and Binnle. Tha committee recommended that the agreement be adopted.—The report wns adopted with the exception of that part relating to the Henry atreet cutting. The clerk was Instructed with regard to that part to ascertain the probable cost of tlie work of cutting the street and report to next meeting of council with the view of tho work being I carried out. THE LEITH ROAD. ! It wns resolvod that the Leith road be re-formed tn one grade and metalled from Woodhaugh store to Pine Hill oreek bridge as soon as funds permit.
