MERCHANTS AND GROCERS OF CHRISTCHURCH. (PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Chbistchubch, September 24.
The difficulty which has existed for some little time past between the Grocers' Association and Edwards, Bennett, and Co. has reached an acute stage. The firm declined to discontinue supplying goods to Messrs Wardell Bros., who are accused of ticketing and advertising prices of goods contrary to tho rules of the association. The members of the committee of the association have withdrawn their business from Edwards and Bennett, who have decided to open a number of grocers' shops in opposition and to sell to the publio at wholesale prices. The Grocers' Association state that no question of boycotting comes into the disagreements. Edwards, Bennett, and Co. have written to the association withdrawing from the agreement made between the merchants of Christchurch on May 23,1889, " Because of your refusal to purchase from us in future, and for instigating others to do so." It is stated that other merchants have also withdrawn from the agreement which is now practically at an end. Edwards and Bennett consider they havo bean forced into their present nosition.
