Country Sales.— Geobge Todd (on behalf of the Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited) reports holding a sale of sheep at Crown Yards, Balclutha, on Tuesday, 2nd lnst., when there was a large quantity of stock forward, principally first quality, The attendance was good and bidding brisk, all being dispoied of at following prices, viz.:— 2092 wethers from 11b 6d to 20s, 1857 hoggets from 9a Cd to 14», and 730 ewes from 8s 6d to 16a 6d.
Store Cattle.—The business done In this claes of Btock during tha last month or two has only been to a very moderate extent, moßt of those changing hands up to the present consisting of the purchase of some of the lighter classes of fat cattle, through the yards, to put on turnips, find replace others being drafted out for market. The Inactivity prevailing at present, however, will no doubt further on assume a livelier aspect. Store Sheep.—There is a considerable amount of inquiry still being madi for certain lines of these, more especially good crossbred hoggets, suitable lines of crossbred wethers, also crossbred and merino ewes in lamb; but there are very few of such offering, consequently the businesß now transacted Is not very extensive.—John Geindley (on behalf of the Farmers' Agency Company, Limited) sold privately over 2000 hoggets and wethers at full rates.—Held, Maclean, and Co. yarded between 500 and 600 on Wednesday, but these failed to reach owners'limits and were withdrawn. Sheepskins. —A good supply came forward for the sales on Tuesday, when there was a large attendance of buyers, who doubtless, owing to the continued dry weather prevailing lately, competed with spirit. Bidding was active throughout, and prices realised were more even and slightly higher (quality compared) than for some time past. Butchera' ureen skins, of good staple and fine, had epeclal attention, and were kesnly run up by all the buyers. For dry skins there was alsoa good demand, eapecially'f jr well-saved fine combing, both crossbred and merino. The followingwere the prices ruling: — Tor eountrydry croasbreds, low to medium,ls 8d to 4s; do do merino, Is 6d to 8s 3d ; full-woolledcrossbreds, 41 9d to 7s 3d ;do do merino, 3a 9d to 6s 3d ; dry pelts, Id to Is 6d; butche.V green cronsbred, best. 6s 4d, 6s 2d. 63 Id. 6s, 5s lOd, 6s 9d, 5s 7d, 8s 4d, 5s 2<i, 5s Id; good to medium and inferior, 6s, 4s lOd, 4s Bd, 4s 6d, 43 4d, 4» 2d. 3s lid, 3s 9d j green merino, 4s 8d 4s 6d, is sd, 43 3d. 4s, 33 lOd, 3s 7d, 3s 4d,. 3s 2d. iiabbitskins.—The local market continues firm at late quotations, with a brisk .demand existing. All sorts comio£ to hand are spiritedly competed for, ] nnd the usual leseu interest continues to be centred in tha proceedings at the auction sales The numerous consignments now earning forward for public sale a-e meeting with very satisfactory attention, especially full-furred winter skins well got up, proparly stretched, and dry. It is (.urmised that sSinDars nre in possession of fresh orders, and in ordurts complete these before the season is much further advanced, prices are.now paid which may possibly not be obtained further on. There was a very full attendance at the auctions on Tuesday, when the proceedings were lively, prices realised, -omparing quality with last week's, being quite on a par with those lately secured. We quote best ylnter irevß bucks and does Is 4Jd to Is sd; selected does, la 5J<2 to Is 6d; ordinary to good, Is 2d to Is 4d; common and low season. 7d to Is; inferior, 4d to 6a; ouckers, 2d to 3d; black and fawn, 6d to Is Id per Ib.
Hides.—ln tho absence of etiitablo markets beyond j fchecolmyl.no depiession prevniMtu hero for tome conslderanldtlmcsellll e-jntlmw*. and oven now the prospect of any immediate Improvement, ".In the tone of the market aecms somewhat rcmoto. We havo no alteration to maka In liut woek's quotations, which wu repeat—vi 2.: For dry salted heary weights, carefully fliiyed, 2id to 3d; medium, 2d to 2jd; Unlit, l^d tol]d; inferior, Id to ljdperlb. Tallow.—There is no material alteration to note in the tone of the market. A very fajr demand continues to exist for both tallow and rough fat by the local manufacturers, who absorb most of the consignments coming to hand. There are no stocks In agents' hands and tho quantity just now offering somewhat limited, so that with a continuation of the hardening tendency of the London market the Indications at the moment are In favour of sellers. We quote prlmo iendere.l mutton, 80s to 21s; medium to good, 16a to 18s; inferior and mixod, 13s to 15s. Rough fat: liest mutton caul, 13s toUsj inferior to medium and good, 9a to 12a 9d per cwt. Grain.—Wheat: Owing to the striko business Is almoßt entirely at a standstill. Millers are unable to ship orders on' band; in consequence their stocks of flour are now increasing, and until they see their way olear out of the present difficulty, and anopportuoity to quit, they will not be disposed to make freßh purchases of wheat, except at prices unfavourable to the seller; neither are shippers in a mood to do very much bußineaa pending a settlement of this unfortunate labour dUpute. The market Is quite bare of prime milling, and the quantity of medium is hot very extensive, but we notice from samples coming to hand that there must be a considerable quantity to come forward from the country yet. Fowls' wheat has a very good demaud for local requirements, but there is very little of this clasa in the market. Quotations for prime velvet and Tuscan, 3s 7d to 3a 9d; medium to good, 3a 3d to 3s 6(1; good red wheat, 3s 3d to 3a sd; inferior to medium, with but little offering, 2s 10d to 3s 2d (ex 6tore, sicks weighed in, terms. — Oata: The Inability to get large orders on hand shipped owing to the disorganised position of the labour market has almost entirely put a stop to any business in this line. Only :or odd lots being disposed of for locU requirementa there would be nothing doing. The prospect at the moment is eminently unsatisfactory, and even if shipping were to be immediately resumed shippers would hardly be disposed to purehaae very freely, preferring to wait results of late purchases. Meantime we quote prime milling (nominally). Is 4d to Is 4Jd ; extra prime, 1b 6d; best short bright feed, Is 3jd to Is 4d; medium to good, Is 3d to Is 3Jd; Inferior and musty, la to Is 2Jd (ex store, sacks weighedin.net).—Barley: The market continues exceedingly quiet, and but little demaod for any- sort. Maltsters at present are careleas about buying unless the quality Is extra good, hardly any of which has been on the market lately; consequently little or no busineiß Is being done. Millers' requirements are not extensive. Small lots are occasionally pieced for feed, but at prices very little above those for oats. Quotations (nominal): For prime malting, 2s 6d to 2a 9d; medium, 2s 3d to 2s 6S; fead and milling. Is 6d to 2s (ex store).
Qrsaß Seeds —The demand for ryegrass seed continues to improve as tho season is advancing, and prices, although no higher, are very firm. We quote:—Beat machine-dresßed perennial, 5s 6d to 5s 9d; medium, 5a to 5a 3d; imported, 5a to 5a 6d (ex store, eaoks extra). Cookfoot hiu a moderately fair demand, but the supply up to the preßent seemfl to be ample for requirements. Quotations: For best dressed, 4Jd to sd; medium, 3}d to 4£d per lb. Potatoes.—The market ia fully supplied for all requirements, but moßtly with very medium Borts. Keally good Derwents are scarce, but few coming to market, and would sell readily. Quotations :for prime Derwenta, 62a 6d to 65a; medium, 60s to 60a ; inferior and kidney. 30s to 40a per ton. Chaff .—The market still continues over supplied, and although a considerable quantity goes into conaumptlon, the demand is limited, rendering it very difficult with ao much coming forward lately to obtain anything like satisfactory prices. Quotations for beat oaten aheaf, well cut, 403 to 43s 6d; extra prime, a shade more ; medium, 27a 6d to 37s 6d per ton.
Dairy Produce.—Local market very dull, and no change in values. Prime salted butter (rathersoarce), 7d to 8d; inferior to medium, over supply and difficult to place. Cheeae: Factory-made, medium alze, in limited parcels, worth only 3,' dto 4d; loaf, 4jd to Jjdperlb.
