Waihora, Captain J. Anderson, left the tongue wharf at 3 p.m. yesterday, with cargo and passengers for Melbourne, via Bluff Harbour. The s.s. Hauroto landed and received cargo at the Jetty street wharf yesterday; she is to anil to-day for Sydney, via Cook Straitß. The s.s. Brunner, Captain Ewan, left Dunedin wharf yesterday afternoon for Westport, via Timaru and other ports. The s.s. Banks Peninsula left the Battray street wharf at midnight yesterday od her periodical trip to Oamaru. The i.e. Kakanui, Captain Best, from Coal Island, via Dusky Sound and the Bluff, arrived at 8 a.m. yesterday with a cargo of timber for Timaru, and Bteamed alongside the hulk at the George street pier for a fresh supply of coal. Captain Beat reports leaving the Bluff on the evening of the 14th inst.; experienced a strong N.W. gale to arrival at Coal Island at 8 a.m. on the 15th; the gale continued until the morning of the 16th, when it moderated, and she proceeded on to Dusky Sound with Docherty and party (It), arriving at the sound at noon; after landing her passengers she left again same afternoon, arriving again at Coal Island at 6 p.m.; took on board six passengers, and left again at midnight, reaching the Bluff at 10 a.m. on the 17th; took in a oargo of timber, and left again at 4 p.m. same day; had strong S.W. winds along the coast, and a'rived as above. -<> THB SHAW, SAVILL, AND ALBION COMPANY (LIMITED). The company's new steamer Eangatira was to have been launched a day or two after the mail left, from the yards of Messrs W. Gray and Co., of West Harlepool. She is 365 ft long, 47ft beam, with a moulded depth of 29Ft 4in. Her engines will be on the triple expansion principle, the cylinders being 271n, -f.3ln, and 7vin respectively, with 45in stroke, and she will steam fully 10 knots on a moderate consumption. She is built on the three-deck principle, with webb frames, so that the lower hold is unbroken by any beama. When fitted it is expected she will carry from 50,000 to 55.010 carcases of mutton, and she will be fitted with a large auxiliary boiler, so as to make her refrigerators independent of the main boiler. She will probably be ready to leave London early in September. Captain Evans has succeeded Captain IJoxlow in connDand of ths company1 * mall steamer Talnul. Captain Evans has been in the Bteamer since her fint voyage—at first as second officer, and latterly &b chief officer— and is woll and favourably known to nil passengers who have travelled by the Bteamer.
