ST. CLAIR BEACH. TO THE EDITOR.

Sin,—l think Mr Walker's suggestion to form an esplanade from St. Clair to Lawyer's Head a moat valuable one, but the cost would bo something considerable unless some inexpensive method were adopted. On that point I have a suggestion to make, which I thiuk is well worth serious consideration by all parties taking an interest in forming an esplanade along the beach at high water mark. JVJy proposal is to erect a «crub fence from St. Clair to Lawyer's Head, the fence to be about Bft high and erected at high water mark. If that were done, we should very soon have a bank of sand Bft high accumulated round about the fenco and of a considerable width, forming a complete breastwork, and would i'cr tho future prevent the sand from being blown into the eea, as the scrub fence would intercept all the sand blown by tho wind from the adjacent sand hills. After the bank of sand is sufficiently high and strong a tramway could be foraied oh the top of the bank thus formed and the whole esplanade protected with stone on the sea side, and the remainder covered with clay for about a chain wide to complete tho esplanade. The fence would only cost £1 per chain, or £160 for the whole worlr, as tho beach is only two miles long; the wind and sand would do the rest.—l am, &c, June 1. ■ X. P.S.—lf there should be any doubt about the success of the proposal, 20 chains could be put up as an experiment on the most exposed part of the beach to convince all parties interested what effect the fence will have. I think this proposal should ba brought under the notice of the Government, as the whole people are interested.
