Wellington, Juno 2. Tho second commission in the Imperial Army recently competed for by Now Zealand officers has bfjen gained by Mr Sisley Davidson, sou of Major-general Davidson, of Canterbury. Mr Davidson, who formerly hold a lieutenant's commission in tho Nelson College Cadets, has boon gazetted to the Somersetshire Regiment (late the 13th), Sir Robert Sales'Jellalabad regiment, now stationed at Jellalabad. In effecting repairs to a house on Thorndon quay, a suit of convict clothes, bearing the New I'lymouth Gaol mark, was found stuffed in tho 6tuds of a bow window. They were mouldy, and had evidently been there for somo years. They were recognised by tho gaoler as the suit worn by Crabtreo when ho escaped about three years ago. Mr Bird, R.M., was entertained at a banquet on Saturday, when speeches condemnatory of tho action of tho Justice department in suspending Mr Bird, and expressivo of the fullest confidence in him and his administration were made. It was decided to take steps to bring public opinion to bear upon tho case in order that Mr Bird might receive fair play. The matter will bo brought before the House, in addition to which a substantial purse of sovereigns will be presented to him. CnmsTcntrncH, June 2.
