The feat of the steamship City of Paris in twice beating in a single year the best previous record for a trans-Atlantic trip is something unparalleled in the history of ocean travel. Tho Btruria twice made the fastest records, but the second fast trip was three years behind the first. Only once before, moreover, has the record been twice beaten in one year. The Christchurch cabmen on Tuesday combined to boycott the cabstands at the railway station, and have expressed their determination to remain away till Constable Kelly, in chargo of the station, is removed. Pickets are keeping guard to prevent advantage being taken of the ranks by any other cabmen, aod letters bi-.vo been sent to the railway commissioners and to the City Council on the subject. The cause of complaint against the constable is that. charges have been brought p.gainst cabmen, and that partiality 13 shown to some and undue severity towards others, against whom ho is alleged to hold spite. »The traffic manager applied to the tramway company to run cars, but the company are unable to comply, as their plant is nil engaged and the manager does not wish to ruu in opposition to the cabmen.
—Sir Lepel Griffin and Captain Patten, with others, have obtained from the Burmese Government a concession of four square miles in the petroleum region in Upper Burmah and propose to develop the fields there.
—Germany last year produced 1,220,000 tons of beet sugar, leading all other nations in that industry. The total production of all European countries was 3,445,000, an increase of nearly 1,000,000 tons over the year 1888.
