SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
HIGH STREBT. The annual meeting of householders in (he High street school district last evening was attended by about 40 persons, In the absence of Mr B, Issac, chairman of the retiring committee, Mr H. Mercer was voted to the chair. The Ch-Uhman read a letter from Mr Isaac explaining the reason of hia absence—namely, that he had removed to reside at the Octagon, and that disqualified him lor election ou the committee. He regretted being thus compelled to sever the connection he had so long held. The Chairman then read the report of the retiring committee, which has been already published. On the motion of Mr Goukley, a vote of thanks to Mr Isaao was unanimously carried, conveying the thanks of the district to him for the great interest he had for so long taken in all matters connected with the school; and expressing regret that circumstances had compelled him to sever his connection with the committee. The nominations of candidates for the new committee were then taken. There were nine candidates nominated, aud on the ballot being taken the following were elected:—J, Hatton, James Caradus, Hector Mercer, Thomas West, Walter Hislop, William Melvin, and Moss Moss. The following is the analysis of the voting :— 7. 6. 5. i. 3. 2. 1. Tl.Voterß J. Caradus ... 5 0 1 1 0 2 5 53 14 J. Hutton ... 5 0 0 2 0 3 2 51 13 H. Mercer ... 0 0 1 0 2 6 9 32 18 T. The annual meeting for the purpose of electing a committee for the ensuing year was held in the Georgo street School last night, when there was an attendance of about 100 householders. Mr William Simpson, chairman of the outgoing committee, occupied tho chair.
The Secretary read the annual report (already published), which was unanimously adopted. The Chairman, referring to Mr Cohen's resignation, said that that gentleman had always been a most zealous worker and had done a very great deal in furtherance of the cause of education. He had from the first taken a very great interest in tho school, and had, in fact, been the originator of tho technical classes, in connection with which ho had been most liberal. They had, unfortunately, to lose him through his removal out of the district; but he expressed a hops that he would not be lost to the cause of education. He was that night going to put up for the Union street Committee, and he sincerely hoped he would be elected. The committee had • always been very fortunate in their secretaries— ' Mr Green had been a most able one, so had "Ulr ; , Beckenham; then came Mr Cohen, and they jj had now Mr Anthony, who waß also a most able jj secretary. With regard to tho raising of tbe jl janitor's salary, it bad been considered that be i was really deserving of all he was to get, jj and cf mora if they could afford it ; ~ for he had always taken a great in- | terest in his work, and not ouly in his own ' work, but in many other thiugs for which the committee would have to pay. With regard to the reference to ways and means mentioned in the report, the committee had curtailed all possible expenses, and they had still been unable to do a great many things that should have beea done owing to want of funds. There was a large amount of asphalting to be done for one thing; and another important thing was the supplying of filters for the school. There was a great deal being said just now about the water, and if any epidemic were to break ont in the school tho committee might be blamed for not supplying filters. There was also the matter of the large shed, which was at present useless owing to the unsafe condition of the wall. All these matters would have to be attended to by the incoming committee, wtose duty it would be to see that the school was kept up to tho proper sanitary standard. The following gentlemen were then proposed as members of committee: —Messrs W. Simpson, R. Coghill, S.M'Donald.C. Haynes, A. S. Adams, J. Wilson. C. B. Anthony, J. Cramond, and J. G. Smith. The voting resulted as follows:— 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Total. S. M'Donald ... 6 0 2 4 10 6 14 124 O. B. Anthony ... 6 0 0 1 3 816 87 A. S. Adams ... 6 1 1 1 2 6 8 S3 W. Coghill ... ... 1 0 1 1 3 5 8 43 In connection with the necessary works and repairs referred to in the report, some discussion took place as to the most advisable way of raising the necessary funds. Suggestions were made as to concerts and bazaars, but neither of these methods appeared to meet with much favour. Finally, the Rev. Mr Kino moved the following resolution—" That the parents of the children attending the school be asked to contribute quarterly, according to their circumstances, towards the necessary expenses of the school." He said that he did not approve of raising funds for the school by means of concerts—it seemed paltry. He felt suro that if such a course as he proposed were adopted they would be able to pay their way without appealing to the public. Mr Haynes seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously.
On tho motion of Mr A. S. Adams, a vote of thanks was accorded to the outgoing committee, and the meeting terminated.
