ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A man named George Thomas was rather severely injured afc Nenthorn on Friday morning. He was engaged blasting rock afc Craig's mining claim, and after setting fire to the fuse in tho usual way he retired to a short distauca to await the explosion, but as ifc did not come off he went back to find out the cause. Just as he got up to the rock the blast went off. Somo of the flying stones hit him on tho head, and he was knocked down and rendered insensible. He was attended to by Mr Thompson, chemist, who found that he had received two deep cuts on the forehead, and that his leffc collar-bone had been broken. He is now progressing favourably.
A young girl of about 14 years of age, the granddaughter of Mr Richard Driver, of Pura-' kanui, met with a very severe Occident ou Sunday. . While walking along the cliffs she missed her footing aud fell a distance of about 200 ft, whero she lay for about seven hours before being picked up and conveyed to her home. She was atteuded by Dr Cunuingham, who fouud that in addition to severe scalp wounds her shoulder was broken and Ehe had sustained severe internal injuries; she lies in a very precarious condition. | Andrew Jackson, a young mao, narrowly escaped being drowed in the surf at Lawyer's Head on Sunday, He could not swim, and therefore contented himself with paddling about in shallow water, but he got beyond his depth, and the -back-wash was steadily carrying him out to sea, when two men who were passi g noticed his plight and at once went to his assistance, bringing him ashore in an unconscious state. He soon recovered. The rescuers deserve every praise for their plucky actioD, for it is certain that had they not acted as promptly and manfully as they did Jackson would have been drowned.
(Peb United Peess Association.) Napier, April 28. News was received last night of the discovery of the dead body of Ernest Peter in the bed of tho Tutakuri river below a cliff 30ft high. Deceased was a son cf the Hou. A. S. Peter, of Ashburton, and was visiting Hawke's Bay with the object of purchashing a country property. He left town on the 14th inst., and had not been heard of till tho discovery of his body. His horse was found on the 17th, lied to some manuka scrub some little distance off the road, about five miles from Puketapu, which place deceased was seen to pass through ou Saturday last. Wellington, April 28. John Wright, two yenre of ago, was accidentally drowned in tho Waipawa river, near Masterton, yesterday. At Wellington yesterday George Gordon, a boy, was killed by some falling timber. A yousg man named Drysdale was violently thrown from his horso at Marfcinborough last night and instantly killed.
