Auckland, April 28. An extraordinary meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Stud Company is to be held on the 16th May, when a motion to tho effect thafc the company be wound up voluntarily is to be proposed. Tha formation of a new company is spoken of.
His Excellency the Governor and Lady Onslow are to leave for Wellington at the end of the presont week. Captain Saville, A.D.C., loft by the Takapuna to-day.
Lady Thurston, wife of Sir John Thurston, returned to Fiji to-day by the Arawata. The firsfc exhibition of the newly formed Academy of Art was opened to-night, tho president, Mr L. J. Steele, delivering an address. The exhibition is a very good one, some splendid work being on view. Amongst those who sent pictures are several Southern artists.
Wellington, April 28. The R.M. gave judgment to-day in the caso in which Peter Garbes, oyster dealer, was charged with exposing for sale rock oysters during the close season. It was urged by counsel for defendant that there wes nothing in the act to prevent oysters taken from opeu water being sold in other parts of New Zealand; but counsel on the other sido submitted that thero was no d stiuction whether tho fish came from a closo or opeu district, as the difendant was not charged with exposing them for sale in an open district, but in Wellington during the season proclaimed as closed. His Worship convicted the defendant and fined him 20a and costs. Counsel for defendant gave notice of his intention to appeal. Dr Hadfield, primate, and tho Bishops of Dunedin and Waiapu left for Christchurch this I afternoon to attend the consecration of the Bishop-elect of Christchurch.
The butchers have notified that on May 1 an advance from £d fco 2d per lb will be made in butchers' meat acoording to joiut. The advance will apply to both beef and mutton. A meeting is called for Wednesday to discuss the rise, wheu a co-operative scheme for the protection of the public will ba discussed.
Up to the preseut the Trades and Labour Couucil has paid £250 for the maintenance of the families thrown out of work by the Petone Woollen Mill difficulty. The sum inclules tho levies made by outside unions.
lii the Bankruptcy Court to-day Mr Justice Richmond said he was not disposed to grant au applioation for the discharge of persons who filed because they were pressed by judgment summons creditors.
The sittings of the Appeal Courfc opened fchid morniug, which wa3 occupied with the fixing of tho order of business. The case of Te Kooti against the Government will nofc bo taken until the end of the week. The court to-day was taken up with hearing the case of Atkinson v. Atkinson, in which William Atkinson appealed against an order made by Mr Justice Denniston restraining him from taking his children out of the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Christchurch. Justices Richmond, Williams, and Conolly, who were pn the bench, dismissed the appeal with 15gs costs.
CnniSTcnuacn, April 28. The railway servants decided to affiliate wifch the Canterbury Trades aud Labour Couucil by 573 to 34.
At tho Police Courfc today two young men were convicted of hooting on Saturday night outside a shop not closed at 9. The Bench said they would tako into consideration tho respectability of tho accused, but ifc must be understood that though they dealt with them leniently on this occasion, a repetifcion'of such conduct would be treated in the severest possible manner. They would not permit hooting aud intimidation to bo carried on without marking their disgust at ifc aud their determination to put ifc down. If persons were disinclined to fall in with the early closing movement they were not to be treated as they had been. Accused would be fined Is each and costs.
The drapers have published a notice that they will not close at 6 on Saturdays.
