THE SETTLEMENT OF THE LAND.

In the U3W edition of the Crown Lands j Guide, just published, it is stated that the bulk of tilt) land is now selected under perpetual lease, and the deferred payment system is next in favour, and after that cash purchases. Some of the other tenures have fallen almost into disuse. The following are areas of lands now open for selection in ysich of the 10 land districts:—Auckland, 201,000 acres, with 20,000 more at tho end of March; Hawke's Bay, 17,000 acres, with 11,000 more shortly, and 27,000 more by the end of March ; Tariinaki, 48,000, with 23,000 by tho end of March; Wellington, 173,000 ami 07,000 by the cud of March ; Hsrlborough, 2000, aud 145,000 in preparation for selection ; Nelson, 38,000 acres; and by the eDd of March there will also bo 50,000 acres of uusurveyed land opon in Canterbury—including education reserves, 121,000, with 87,000 raoro by the'end of March ; Oc.-.go, 50,000; Southland, 95,000; Westiand, 86,000—mostly heavy forest lv the deseriptivu portion of (.ho work it ia mentioned that the extent of loud in cultivation, including town grasses, has increased from 007,177 acres in ISG9, mid 4,500,889 in 1870, to 7,070,107 in 18S9.
