London cablegrams announce that Surofoot ia a firm favourite F'jr tho Derby at 4to 1. The batting on the Uuiversity bout race ia 0 to 4 against Cambridge. Petteugoll, of Wellington, who has on frequent occasions been a party to pugilistic exhibitions in this city, and George Allen, of San Francisco. There was a moderate attendance of spectators. The proceedings were commenced in what appears to be tho regulation way with "sparring" matches between friends, and the "event of the evening" wr.s not started until after 0 o'clock. Mr Martin Taylor was selected as refercs. The match was to a finish, and was fought under the Marquis of Queensberry rules. Allen is a tall, well-built man, but has' not the physique of Pettengell; and, though a scientific fighter, does not reserve his streugth so well as the latter. After four rounds of hard fighting, the match wes concluded in the fifth—being awarded to Petteugell by the referee on a claim for a foul. Allen's second had just previously claimed that tho stakes should bu awarded to tho American on tho ground of an alleged cross-huttock by Petteogt-11, but this claim'was disallowed. As to the justice of the referee's subsequent decision thcra can be no doubt, as Allen distinctly struck PetteugctU while the latter was on the ground.
