AUCKLAND LICENSING ELECTIONS.
(From Ouu Own Cohuhspondent.) j Auckland, February 19. i Tho Prohibitionists wero again defeated in Ponsonby by au average majority of 140 votes each. The Moderates did not poll within 14 of their highest number of last year, while tho | Prohibitionists did not poll within 30 of their highest number; but as a number of faggot voters were put on during the year to influence the licensing elections, and which the City Council under tho present state of the law wero compelled to accept, tho Prohibitionists hold that their actual loss on last year waß 17 votes. Some of the leases prepared for these faggot voters showed that the allotments referred to were some of them 10ft by 10ft, and even smaller ureas. The Legislature could never, have contemplated proceedings of that kind, I ntid the Prohibitionists find it practically hope- i less to compute with tactics of that description. In City East and City North a very strong Independent ticket was taken all along the line, to the complete surprise of tho public, who thought they would win hands down. The brewers' ticket carried tho day, although one brewing firm breaking awny from the confederacy supported tho independent ticket, aB also did a small section of the publicans.
